Winemaker Notes
While rosé production has not been a “standard” for the Johan repertoire, 2020 presented the opportunity to make the Austrian-inspired rosé we have dreamt of since grafting the varieties into the vineyard. It turned out so great that we have continued to play and experiment to make a textural and compelling rosé, each year a little different from the last. The 2023 Disco Chicken wine is a blend of Zweigelt (68%), Pinot Noir (20%), and Kerner (12%). Both red varieties were harvested, soaked on skins for a few hours and direct pressed – and followed up with the addition of destemmed Kerner berries floating in the juice during fermentation to bring a textural, floral pop to the wine. The finished wine is bright and focused, with beautiful acidity and crunchy red fruit. Our friend Lia designed the label to highlight one of our favorite music genres - DISCO - and our lovable and gregarious Johan chickens. Vintage Notes Following the difficult and late vintage of 2022, 2023 was a “breeze” comparatively. With relatively average budbreak and bloom dates, the rest of the summer provided ample warmth, with a warmer than average August which accelerated ripening and pushed veraison into gear. Late September and October delivered a series of rain events, allowing for small breaks in the picking schedule and a longer, drawn-out harvest. The 2023 wines have beautifully evolved tannins that continue to mature, making for powerful yet balanced wines to complement our classic Johan salinity.
