Winemaker Notes
While we have had Gamay Noir planted on our property since 2012, it wasn’t until the 2023 vintage that we had the opportunity to try our hand at making it ourselves. Quite a surprise, as it happens to be a favorite variety amongst our winegrowing team. Having this grape in our cellar felt like finding the missing puzzle piece, as this was the sole variety on the property that had not yet been fermented in our cellar (out of 14!). For the inaugural vintage, we applied a similar fermentation approach to that of our favorite whole cluster Pinot Noir fermentations. The goal: to find a “starting point” and see what this grape wants to tell us about the site through another varietal lens. Sure enough, this first bottling encompasses all our favorite Johan terroir qualities – bright, crunchy red fruit and loads of spice, layered in with refined tannins and a perfectly quenching finish of salinity.

Following the difficult and late vintage of 2022, 2023 was a “breeze” comparatively. With relatively average budbreak and bloom dates, the rest of the summer provided ample warmth, with a warmer than average August which accelerated ripening and pushed veraison …
