A half-acre Alpine field blend (~80% red / 20% white) at the top of the estate hill, Syrah planted alongside its genetic relatives from both sides of the Alps plus a few geographically convenient varieties to amplify lift, acidity and Italianate bitterness, “an Italianate version of old-school Côte Rôtie.” Named for the surrounding hawthorns (crataegus). Always among the last parcels picked, so it reflects the year with great fidelity.
